The Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Program was started in the mid 1990s as a way to recognise those members of the general public who devoted their time and considerable computing skills, on a voluntary basis, to helping users 'in distress' in the various newsgroups hosted by Microsoft. There are now around 1800 MVPs worldwide who actively participate in the Microsoft Technical Newsgroups. Many are IT consultants, some are published authors or technical instructors, and there are those who have no formal training but have an in-depth level of practical experience.

Playback Television recordings created with Windows XP Media Center Edition on Windows XP Home, Professional and Tablet PC Editions

In order to playback .dvr-ms video recordings on a non-media center edition PC you will require the following hardware and software.

Software Requirements:

For Windows XP and Windows XP with Service Pack 1:
Windows XP Home/Professional with the Service Pack 1 update installed or Tablet PC Edition
Q810243: Recommended Update - DirectShow Playback Support for Windows XP Media Center Edition Recorded Files
Microsoft Windows Media Player 9.0
A Direct Show DVD decoder engine (Such as Power DVD, Win DVD or a DVD Playback Pack)

For Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later:
You require only a Direct Show DVD decoder engine (Such as Power DVD, Win DVD or a DVD Playback Pack)
All other required items are now intergrated into the Windows XP Service Pack

Hardware Requirements:
Any Intel Compatible CPU running at 1Ghz or higher
A Video Card with 32Mb onboard video ram

DVR-MS files contain MPEG2 audio and video streams which is why a Windows XP compatible direct show DVD decoder is required for playback. If a DVD decoder is not installed media player will not play the file and give an error that it was unable to find a codec to playback the file.

NOTE: A broadcaster can decide a show is copy protected, if this is done it is still possible to playback the file using the Windows XP Media Center Edition PC that it was recorded on but the file created will not playback on any other PC and/or device.
