The Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Program was started in the mid 1990s as a way to recognise those members of the general public who devoted their time and considerable computing skills, on a voluntary basis, to helping users 'in distress' in the various newsgroups hosted by Microsoft. There are now around 1800 MVPs worldwide who actively participate in the Microsoft Technical Newsgroups. Many are IT consultants, some are published authors or technical instructors, and there are those who have no formal training but have an in-depth level of practical experience.

Installing DVD Playback in Windows XP

When you install XP, DVD decoding does not come as standard. The only way you will get a DVD decoder (without installing one yourself) is if you buy a new machine that comes pre-installed with one or you upgrade to XP from a previous operating system that had one installed. The easiest way to check if you have one installed is to do the following.

Run Box - dvdupgrd /detect

Open your run box (Start Button > Run) and type 'DVDUPGRD /Detect' without quotes and then press ok.

No Decoder Found Decoder Found

What you do next depends on what the program comes back with, if  the windows says the same as the left image and no decoders are found click ' I don't have a decoder installed '. If a decoder is identified as shown in the right image click ' I have a decoder installed'
