The Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Program was started in the mid 1990s as a way to recognise those members of the general public who devoted their time and considerable computing skills, on a voluntary basis, to helping users 'in distress' in the various newsgroups hosted by Microsoft. There are now around 1800 MVPs worldwide who actively participate in the Microsoft Technical Newsgroups. Many are IT consultants, some are published authors or technical instructors, and there are those who have no formal training but have an in-depth level of practical experience.

Service Pack 1 Will not install, I'm told I have an invalid product key

Full Error Message:

'The Product Key used to install Windows is invalid. Please contact your system administrator or retailer immediately to obtain a valid Product Key. You may also contact Microsoft Corporation's Anti-Piracy Team by emailing piracy@microsoft.com if you think you have purchased pirated Microsoft software. Please be assured that any personal information you send to the Microsoft Anti-Piracy Team will be kept in strict confidence.'

This error is displayed on machines where the product key that has been used to install Windows is known to be used heavily on pirated versions of Windows XP. Service Pack 1 will not install

These two product keys create a product ID that matches one of the following product IDs (where X is any numeric value): XXXXX-640-0000356-23 XXX XXXXX-640-2001765-23 XXX (Click here for how to view your product id). If you have brought what you believe to be a legal version of Windows go back to where you purchased it and ask for a legal product key.

In order to install SP1 you will need a legal version of the Windows XP Edition you are currently using, insert the CD
into your drive before Windows loads and boot from the CD (may require this function to be enabled in your computers BIOS). Once Windows XP setup has begun press Enter to start setup and press F8 to agree to the EULA. Select the current windows install to repair and press R. This will give you the ability to change the pirate key with a new legal retail key.

Service Pack 1 Setup could not verify the integrity of the file. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer

NB: This issue will also cause DirectX 9.0/a setup to report it is incompatible with Windows XP.

This problem can occur if the Cryptographic Service is Disabled in services.msc or a file within %Systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 folder has become corrupt.

To correct this issue, first go Start > Run and enter services.msc
A list of Windows Services should now appear on your screen, scroll down the list until you find Cryptographic Services. Right click this and select properties. Now ensure that the startup type is set to automatic and click the start button in that window if the service status is stopped.

If the problem persists, go to run and type in cmd then click ok.
Next type in the following commands, at the end of each line press the return key on your keyboard

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Now attempt to run the Service Pack 1/DX9 installer again.

If this does not help go to Start > Run and type in %temp%
Delete all items in this folder and attempt setup again. If you are using Windows XP on a FAT32 formated hard diskyou should also run scan disk (right click on hard disk in my computer > properties > tools tab > error checking > check now button).

If you are still having issues it is possible that other Windows System files may be dammaged, to attempt a repair go to Start > Run and type cmd
After doing this enter the following two commands in this order, SFC /Purgecache followed by SFC /ScanNow
Performing these operations may take several minutes and will require your Windows XP install disc unless a copy of the i386 folder from an install disc is located on your hard disk (usually c:\i386).

If you are still having an issue at this point you may require to reregister certain dll libraries.
Go to Start and open the run box, in order to register the dll's we must use the following syntax

regsvr32 nameof.dll

Start off by entering the following into the run dialog - regsvr32 softpub.dll
Then register the following dll files by operning the run box again and typing regsvr32 and the name of the following files (one at a time).

Wintrust.dll, Initpki.dll, Dssenh.dll, Rsaenh.dll, Gpkcsp.dll, Sccbase.dll, Slbcsp.dll, Mssip32.dll, and Cryptdlg.dll.

An update is now available that can prevent catroot2 files from becoming corrupt again, to obtain it visit the Windows Update site and download Q817287: Critical Update (Catalog Database Corruption in Microsoft Windows), this should correct the problem and prevent it in future. This update will not appear on the Windows Update site unless you have Service Pack 1 for Windows XP installed. This update requires the above action to be taken before it will install.

Service Pack 1 - "Access is Denied" at the end of the XP Service Pack 1 setup

Check in the Service Pack setup log (C:\Windows\svcpack.log). In the log if you have an item which points to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{5B9169C0-DB65-42AA-A38A-0726846AAEB3}

Open Regedit (Start > Run > Regedit) and navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate \Auto Update\ResetAU
Right click on ResetAU and select properties, ensure the Administrators group and System account have permission to access this registry key and those contained below it.

If you are using an NTFS formated drive ensure that the administrators group and system account have full control of this folder: c:\1adb29f45d19253874d9e26de0e056cb\update

If you still have issues download and run Filemon and Regmon as you run SP1 setup.
This error is caused because the update program cannot access a certain registry key or file, these two programs will allow you to monitor what is going on and track down which key or file is the problem.

Service Pack 1 Parser Message: Value creation failed" at line 472" error when add/remove programs is opened

This error can occur after installing SP1 when you are running a non Microsoft visual style and the folder
containing the customised styleshell.dll has a differing name from the themes name (as shown in the appearances tab).
To get rid of this error you can switch back to a Microsoft Theme or go to
/WINDOWS/Resources/Themes/<Name of theme in use> and rename the shell folder to the name of the visual style shown in the appearance tab. If you have a theme with multiple variations you must make this change for each subfolder containing a differing styleshell.dll file

When I try to install optional components on a Windows XP computer with SP1 express installed, the installer may asks for your 'Service Pack 1' CD

Download the complete network installation of SP1 from www.microsoft.com , and copy the contents of your Windows XP CD to C:\XP. Now, go to start > run and type cmd.exe
Once the command prompt window has opened and change to the directory you downloaded the SP1 EXE file to, and run "sp1.exe -s:c:\XP". When that is done, run the IIS installer again, and when you are asked for your SP1 CD, point it to " C:\XP\I386 ". It is necessary to perform this step because the SP1 Express installer will only have downloaded the updated files for components that were installed on your machine at the time.

After Upgrading to Service Pack 1 I can no longer change Identities

A fix for this issue is included in the October 2002 Cumulative Update for Outlook Express 6.0 SP1

As a workaround to this issue you uncheck the check box on the File > Identities > Manage Identities (dialog box) marked "Use this identity when starting a program". This causes the switch to pause and generate a UI for you to choose an ID to start OE in again, when you try and Switch Identity

Since Installing Service Pack 1 I can no longer open attachments in Outlook Express

This issue is there by design to prevent access to files attached to newsgroup or emails that could potentially contain a virus. To turn this off; Go Tools > Options in Outlook Express and click the security tab. Uncheck
'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could contain a virus'. Click okay and then try to view the email or posts again. Attachments should
now act as normal.
